Jake has extensive experience in all aspects of litigation, having tried numerous cases at both the state and federal level, as well as successfully defending appeals to both the Michigan and United States courts of appeals. He has represented clients ranging from small startups to multi-million dollar entities and understands how to properly analyze and serve a wide range of client needs. Jake understands that litigation can be a confusing, uncertain, and sometimes scary experience. Accordingly, Jake places a premium on keeping his clients prepared and informed throughout the litigation process.

Business Law.

Jake routinely consults with his business clients on day to day matters including employment issues, contract formation, negotiation and review. Jake believes in a proactive approach to learning about his clients’ specific business needs, identifying cost-effective solutions, and keeping his clients out of the courtroom. When business disputes do arise, Jake is able to fall back on his wealth of litigation experience, which includes shareholder oppression claims, contract disputes, real estate issues and breach of warranty claims.

Intellectual Property.

Jake has extensive experience in the world of intellectual property having successfully upheld the validity of trademarks and defended against copyright infringement claims. Jake also routinely deals with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on issues of trademark registration and maintenance, and consults with clients on the use and protection of their intellectual property.

Real Estate Transactions.

Jake assists clients with all types of real estate transactions. Whether it is a simple land contract of a vacant home or a purchase of a commercial building with several tenants, he works diligently to make sure that all aspects of the sale are complete and accurate from the preparation of an offer to purchase through the closing of the sale.

Property Tax.

Jake has served as counsel for both taxpayers and municipalities in property tax appeals to the Michigan Tax Tribunal. Jake has successfully defended numerous challenges to municipality assessments brought on behalf of several large businesses. Jake has also successfully challenged taxing authority assessments and decisions of the State Tax Commission on behalf of his taxpayer clients.

Jake is very active in his community having previously served on the boards of the Grand Haven Young Professionals and the Muskegon Count Bench Bar Association. He was also a member of the Grand Haven Chamber of Commerce and served as chairman of the Leads 4 Networking Group. He is currently active in the Grand Valley State University Track and Field Alumni Board. Jake and his wife, Kristyn, reside in Rockford with their son Luke. When he’s not in the office, Jake enjoys spending time with family, woodworking, boating on Big Star Lake, golfing, biking, kayaking, or hanging out in the woods.
